Come si dice ? In Italiano ci sono due parole per padre: Babbo e Papà. 

Di solito si pensa che sia meglio usare la forma papà, più diffusa ed usata in tutta Italia , mentre babbo, usato solo in Toscana, è considerato una forma regionale, una sorta di dialetto . Ma non è così!  Entrambe  le forme sono utilizzabili sono corrette ma  Babbo è la forma più antica.  

Fin dai primi del novecento, in gran parte dell’Italia, la forma più affettuosa e familiare era proprio Babbo. Il termine lo troviamo perfino nella Divina Commedia di Dante. 

Papà dalla Francia

Papà invece è una parola che arriva dalla Francia ed arriva  in Italia, a Venezia ed in Piemonte, dove forte era l’influenza francese, intorno al XVIII secolo.  Papà rimane a lungo una parola usata solo dalla borghesia e aristocrazia ed appare nel vocabolario della lingua italiana solo nel 1945.

Babbo Natale

Quindi, quella che tutti considerano la parola ufficiale per “padre” in realtà  è una parola straniera entrata nel linguaggio italiano abbastanza di recente.  E Babbo Natale? Rimane Babbo e mai Papà Natale e questo in tutta Italia!

E per finire, non chiedeteci nemmeno se crediamo a Babbo Natale!  Certo che sì!!!

Usually Papà is considered to be the best one as it is largely used all over Italy except in Tuscany, where Babbo is utilized instead.  This one is wrongly considered to be a regional form of the word father. In fact Babbo actually is the oldest word and we can even find it in Dante’s Divina Commedia!   At the beginning of the 1900s Babbo was the most popular and familiar way to call Father.

Papà from France

Papà comes from France and reaches Italy ( Venice and Piedmont, where French influence was strong)  around the XVIII Century. For a long time, this expression remains used only by aristocrats and it appears in the Italian dictionary for the first time in 1954.

Therefore, the word that everybody considers to be the official way to say Father in Italy, is a foreign word instead. 

Babbo Natale? Santa?

There is only one Babbo Natale and it is called BABBO and never Papà all over Italy.  What? Are you asking us whether we believe in Santa? Of course we do!
