Chiacchiere con Chiara: Sheryl Ness, the Chef’s Wife (IT-EN)

S:  Si proviamoci! Ciao Chiara!

(EN)Savoring life through the romance, recipes and traditions of Italy: Sheryl Ness also known as “the chef’s wife” is the author of the book Love in a Tuscan Kitchen”

In the book, Sheryl tells us her  story, her journey in Italy in a moment of her life when she desperately needed a real change. It is the true and honest story of her personal search for something different that led her to Tuscany, in a small postcard-like Chianti village: San Gusmè.  Surrounded by vineyards and breathtaking views, everything looked idillic but Sheryl wasn’t there on holiday. In fact,  she had left the US, where she was working as nurse and Head of a department in a big hospital, because she needed a real break.    That’s why she left her comfort zone, accepted a temporary job, totally different from her previous one and her background, all in exchange for a full immersion into slow life, a different rhythm.

CH: Well,  now thank you very much for you time, Sheryl and let’s chat a bit in Italian and a bit in English!

S: (EN) Let’s try!

L’avventura di Sheryl in Toscana

CH: Sheryl dove vivi? – (EN) Where do you live?

(EN) now we are in Minnesota, next to Canada. This is my home. I now work as a nurse and I also write for a company in Nashville and I travel the world for work; Vincenzo has found a good job here in Rochester.

Love-in-a-Tuscan-Kitchen

(EN) Forgive me, I haven’t introduced Vincenzo yet. In her book, Sheryl talks about a very special encounter. While she was in Tuscany, in Chianti, she met the Chef of a local restaurant. Actually,  first  she fell in love with a chocolate dessert, she loves food, and after tasting it she wanted to pay her compliments to the Chef. This is how she met Vincenzo Giangiordano and it was love at first sight. Now Vincenzo is her husband and they live together in the United States.

(EN) Yes it is true, I fell in love with Vincenzo after falling in love with his dessert and asking him for the recipe. I knew I would have left Tuscany in a few weeks and I was very sad. I asked him for the cake recipe so that I could reproduce it once at home. A bit of Tuscany with me. At that time with my broken Italian I needed help from a young bilingual friend of mine, Emma. She helped us a lot at that time .

–  (EN) So Vincenzo didn’t speak English, you didn’t speak much Italian: it must have been difficult to communicate. How did you manage it?

(EN) Yes it was very difficult, but ,you know, sometimes it is almost better like this, it gives you a better idea of how the relationship may work. In a relationship there is much more than just words. There is sensibility, empathy   and, between us, often it is enough a look to understand each other. It is very special.   We understand each other with no need for words and it has been like that from the very beginning. A word after another, little by little, then I studied a lot for about one year. I came back to the States while Vincenzo stayed  in Italy . So I told myslef: and now…what do I do!??” So I studied a lot.

– (EN) How and when did Vincenzo learn English?

A volte non trovo la parola allora uso inglese…Travel to Tuscany from home through “Love in a Tuscan Kitchen”

S: he speaks English well now but, 8 years ago when he first arrived, he only knew a few words. He was patient, he learnt especially at work , he had to as I wasn’t there to help him. And then, as he didn’t really have a choice,  he used google translate, he practiced it at work and with me at home. Now we speak a mixed language at home, depending on the moment. Sometimes I can’t find the right word so I switch to English …

CH: Qualche volta “non ti viene” la parola, noi diciamo.-  ( EN) When you can’t remember the world, in Italy we say “ the word doesn’t  come to you”!

S: Si non mi viene la parola. Esatto! – (EN) Exactly so!

CH: Vincenzo di dov’è in Italia? – (EN) Where does Vincenzo come from?

(EN) He comes from the Abruzzo region. He was born there and then he worked in Tuscany for 14 years…with his business-partner (socio, not suocera, that means mother in law) in the tiny village of San Gusmè.  It’s a very beautiful place, like its people.

Eri “l’americana” per loro?-   (EN) In your book you talk about your love for locals. You met  a lot of people and you always felt welcome. You were called “the american “, is it right?

(EN) At the beginning it was weird, they didn’t know that I was there for love, they thought I was just a tourist. Later on, they understood and they welcomed me within the community.

CH: Quanto tempo sei rimasta a San Gusmè con Vincenzo? – (EN) How long did you stay there with Vincenzo?

(EN) We lived 6 years in San Gusmè after getting married. For everybody I was  “ the Chef’s wife”, as to pronounce my name is very difficult for Italians.

CH: Senti, adesso negli Stati Uniti tuo marito è Chef ma fate ancora insieme dei corsi di cucina?- (EN) Now in the States, your husband is a Chef in a restaurant but you still do cooking classes together, is it right?

(EN) Yes it is our common passion, our common project, a hobby for me: teaching  Italian regional cuisine to Americans is very nice, it’s lovely. Vincenzo now also teaches by himself.

Un amore, due lingue: come si fa?

CH: Fai a Vincenzo i miei complimenti. Quando sei arrivata la prima volta parlavi un po’ italiano?- (EN) My congratulations to Vincenzo for this! – When you first arrived in Italy, how much Italian did you speak?

Poi grazie a Vincenzo.

(EN) Only the basics to ask directions, then I studied. At that time there were no smart phones and so I used books, I read a lot and used Rosetta Stone one of the first programs available for learning a new language. Then I learnt thanks to Vincenzo.

The secret to learn a new language seems to be to find a lover, so I would say you had  good help!

Comunque sto ancora costantemente imparando

(EN) Yes but also another thing that helped me a lot was exchanging with my local girl friends, they wanted to learn English. so we used to do both languages. This helped me a lot. When I started understanding their conversations I felt very happy. However,  I am still learning.

Cosa ami dell’Italia ?

I understand very well, it’s the same for me too- If you had to choose something you really loved while in Italy, what would it be?

Mi mancano ancora i mercati settimanali.

(EN) There are many things but most of all, love for traditions, so present everywhere, together with  the beautiful views , the special Italian food, of course, and also the habit that  Italians have to eat what is available in season. This is different in the States , even though things arenow  changing. I miss local markets there.

Le parole più belle…

CH: Hai anche qualche parola preferita in italiano?- (EN) Do you have a favourite world in Italian?

(EN) Noit sure, maybe “ amore mio” …I like very much the sound of long words such as ATTRAVERSARE and TRASTEVERE…the music of the language!

CH: Hai un progetto con un nuovo libro?- (EN) Do you have a project for a new book?

(EN) I don’t know. The book I wrote took me 4 years to compete. It is a long work and you need time and money. Maybe I will write a recipe book one day ,  but my first book was special. It was my story , my life. Now it is only available in English and you can find it on amazo . I hope soon i twill be available also in Italian, the translation is a work done in collaboration also with you. We need to find an editor!

– (EN) By the way it would great to have a movie made from this story!

S: Grazie, si sarebbe bellissimo! – (EN) Yes thank you, that would be wonderful!
