Chiacchiere con Chiara : Per me è un vero onore avere la testimonianza di Carrie Anne James, che, posso dire, è stata mia musa ispiratrice per il mio lavoro.
Ho infatti scoperto Carrie Anne, la creatrice di “French is Beautiful”, piattaforma di insegnamento del francese e dell’art de vivre alla francese, in un momento difficile durante la pandemia, quando la mia attività free-lance (appena nata) si era dovuta fermare completamente. Dovevo trovare un nuovo modo di poter lavorare con i miei studenti nel mondo che non potevano più viaggiare…Ho scoperto il suo metodo ed ho realizzato quante cose belle si potevano fare anche online!
Direi che il suo approccio all’insegnamento mi ha dato la speranza e il desiderio di provare qualcosa di nuovo, di creativo e differente online! Così mi sono iscritta ad un suo corso (perché io adoro il francese), lei si è iscritta ad uno mio (già parlava molto bene italiano) e poi, una cosa dopo l’altra, ho avuto il piacere di conoscerla dal vivo, prima online e poi anche in persona , proprio in Toscana. In fact, I discovered Carrie Anne, the creator of “French is Beautiful“, a platform for teaching French and the French art de vivre, in a difficult moment during the pandemic, when my (newly born) freelance business had to stop completely. I had to find a new way to be able to work with my students around the world who could no longer travel… I discovered her method and realized how many beautiful things could also be done online! I would say that her approach to teaching has given me hope and the desire to try something new, creative and different online! So I enrolled in one of her courses (because I love French), she enrolled in one of mine (she already spoke Italian very well) and then, one thing after another, I had the pleasure of meeting her, before online and then also in person, right in Tuscany.

CA: Sono nata a Cleveland, Ohio, ed ho trascorso la mia infanzia in Michigan , a Grand Blanc, negli Stati Uniti. La mia famiglia si è poi trasferita a Santa Rosa, California dove ho passato la mia adolescenza, dopo sono andata al College U.C Berkeley. Ho studiato musica lì, e questo è fondamentale per capire come mi sono innamorata di Parigi e della cultura francese.
Durante il college ho studiato a Parigi per un anno concentrandomi sul pianoforte all’École Normale de Musique e sulla Letteratura Francese alla Sorbonne. (EN) I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent my childhood in Grand Blanc, Michigan, in the United States. My family then moved to Santa Rosa, California, where I spent my adolescence, later going to college at U.C. Berkeley (across the bay from San Francisco). I studied music there, which is central to how I fell in love with Paris and French culture. I studied abroad in Paris for a year during college, focusing on piano at L’École Normale de Musique and on French literature at the Sorbonne. Music is what initially drew me to Paris and the French language is what made me fall in love with the city. When I returned to Berkeley to finish my degree, I knew that I would live in Paris full-time one day, but did not imagine that I would start a business that would bring me here. French is Beautiful is an online universe for Francophiles searching to be as close to the essence of French as possible through language and other intangible aspects of French culture, including philosophy, elements of l’art de vivre and mindset. It currently has two subscriptions available: The French Lessons (for studying French) and The Paris Lessons (a collection of travel essays focusing on experiences in and around Paris, with accompanying guided meditations). French is Beautiful also has a series of self-paced digital courses ranging in topics from the subjunctive to self-care. I dreamed up French is Beautiful while living in Los Angeles prior to moving to Paris, where I worked as an actor, a musician and also as a private French and Spanish tutor. Before living in Los Angeles, I studied theater and worked in a French-owned gallery (as well as in finance and as a legal assistant for a law firm with primarily Spanish-speaking clients) in New York. I didn’t know it at the time, but all of these experiences added together gave me the balance between inspired creativity and business sense that nourish French is Beautiful.
CHIARA: Quali lingue parli ? Come è il tuo personale metodo per imparare una lingua. Come hai imparato tu l’italiano per esempio? – (EN) What languages do you speak? What is your personal method to learn a new language? And how did you learn Italian?
CA: Conosco varie lingue ma direi che parlo francese, spagnolo e italiano. Ogni volta che viaggio in un Paese straniero, cerco sempre di imparare le basi della lingua, o almeno l’essenziale per viaggiare. Per esempio ho imparato le basi dell’ebraico per un incredibile viaggio che ho fatto in Israele qualche anno fa e ho fatto lo stesso per un altro splendido viaggio in Brasile . Ho studiato spagnolo alla scuola superiore e, in seguito, Scrittura Creativa in spagnolo mentre lavoravo a New York. Ho iniziato a studiare francese non appena la musica classica francese e la tradizione del pianoforte in Francia sono diventate la mia piacevole ossessione, comprendendo così che il mio sogno era studiare musica a Parigi. Ho iniziato a studiare anche italiano mentre ero a New York, con classi serali dopo il mio lavoro in una galleria d’arte e continuando poi con un master alla Sorbona. Ho poi avuto la fortuna di continuare a studiarlo privatamente anche con te.
Imparare queste lingue mi ha aiutata a conoscermi meglio come studente , per capire come io stessa imparo le lingue . Personalmente imparo soprattutto visivamente, cioè per me è importante lavorare sulle basi dapprima scrivendo, prima di passare all’ascolto e alla conversazione. Alla fine, il percorso per imparare una lingua fino ad parlarla “fluidamente” ( preferisco dire “fluidamente” piuttosto che “fluentemente” dato che il secondo concetto ha in sé un senso intrinseco di perfezionismo che può essere bloccante/ negativo per gli studenti, me inclusa)
(EN) I am familiar with quite a few languages, but would only say that I speak French, Spanish and Italian. Whenever I travel to a foreign country, I make it a point to learn the basics, or at least the travel essentials, of that country’s language. For example, I learned basic Hebrew for an incredible trip that I took to Israel years ago and did the same for an amazing trip to Brazil. I studied Spanish in high school and then later creative writing in Spanish while working in New York. I started studying French in college as soon as I became obsessed with French classical music and the French tradition of piano playing, realizing that my dream was to study music in Paris. I began studying Italian while living in New York, taking night classes after the gallery closed for the day and then continued studying it during my masters at the Sorbonne, and I’ve been lucky to study privately with you since. Learning these languages has helped me to get to know myself as a student, to get to know how I, personally, learn languages. I learn best visually, meaning that it is important for me to work on the foundations in writing before progressing into listening and then speaking practice.
At the end of the day, the path from studying a language to speaking it fluidly (I prefer ‘fluidly’ to ‘fluently’ as I find that the notion of fluency has an inherent layer of perfectionism in it, which can be daunting for students, this one included) is ultimately a path from studying to improvisation. What I mean by this is that one must focus on learning as much as they can in their isolated moments of study so that they have many tools (i.e., words, expressions, etc.) to play with as they improvise (as they speak) the language out in the world.
Nuova lingua, nuova vita?
CHIARA: Il mio “motto” è: “chi parla più lingue vive più vite”. Quello che cerco di dire è che chi parla una nuova lingua ha l’occasione di vivere una vita nuova. Opportunità nuove, nuovi incontri ma non solo, tu sei un esempio!! …Nella mia esperienza quando si parla un’altra lingua in un altro Paese, siamo davvero persone diverse. Come se la lingua differente tirasse fuori un’altra parte di noi. Non so se questo ti parla, se ti riconosci in questa mia idea…- (EN) Do you agree with my idea that a new language opens opportunities to new lives?
CA: Questa è un’idea interessante per me perché è vero che, prima del mio trasferimento a Parigi nel 2015, io mi sentivo una persona diversa negli Stati Uniti, o almeno come se una parte della mia personalità prendesse il sopravvento in USA. Dopo essere vissuta in Francia per molti anni ed avere ottenuto la doppia cittadinanza ( francese ed americana), non ho più quel contrasto netto dentro di me tra chi sono io in America e in Francia.
Tuttavia noto che parti diverse della mia personalità sono capaci di avere un ruolo predominante quando viaggio in Spagna o Italia in confronto a quando mi trovo in Francia. Sono anche assolutamente d’accordo che persone che parlano più lingue hanno più opportunità, il loro mondo si apre e sono capaci di interagire con più persone e, certamente, di connettersi con loro in modo più profondo- parlando la loro lingua e andando direttamente alla mente e al cuore.
(EN) This is an interesting idea for me to comment on because it is true that, prior to moving to Paris in 2015, I used to feel like I was a different person here than when I was in the States, or at least that a different part of my personality was able to take center stage here. Having now lived here for many years and become a dual citizen (French and American), I don’t have that stark contrast anymore between my experience of Self in the States vs. in France. I do, however, notice that different parts of my personality are able to take center stage when I am traveling in Spain or in Italy as compared to France. And I absolutely agree that people who speak more languages have more opportunities, that their world opens up as they are able connect with more people and most definitely to connect with people in the deepest way possible — in the other person’s language, directly to the other person’s mind and heart.
CHIARA: Ovviamente parlare francese ha avuto un enorme impatto sulla tua vita, la direzione che la tua vita ha preso. Quando hai deciso o hai sentito che la lingua era il mezzo per cambiare vita? – (EN) Obviously speaking French had a huge impact on your life, on the direction your life has taken. When did you decide or felt that the language was the means to change your life?
CA: Adoro questa domanda, mi riporta a ricordi lontani. Uno dei migliori amici dei miei genitori del college studiava francese e andò ad una scuola di specializzazione a Parigi. I miei ( i miei genitori) parlavano spesso dei suoi viaggi in Francia e quando veniva a trovarci, mi portava sempre un libro per bambini in francese (ce li ho ancora tutti) . Così ho imparato come parlare un’altra lingua apra la possibilità a nuove avventure nella vita. Questa persona è ancora come uno di famiglia per me, abbiamo un legame speciale grazie ai tanti bei ricordi costruiti insieme a Parigi.
(EN) I love this question; it traces back to my earliest memories. One of my parents’ best friends from college studied French and went to graduate school in Paris. My parents would speak often of his travels to France and when he would visit us, he would always bring me a children’s book in French (I still have them all). This is how I learned the ways in which speaking another language opens up one’s life to more adventures. He is someone that is still like family to me today, we have a special bond, having made many beautiful memories together here in Paris.
Vivere a Parigi “in inglese”, si può?
CHIARA: Si può vivere a Parigi ,secondo te, senza parlare bene francese?E’ diverso in altre parti della Francia?– (EN) In your opinion, is it possible to live in Paris without speaking good French? Is it different in other parts of France?
CA: La mia riposta a questa domanda ha vari livelli. E’ possibile vivere a Parigi senza parlare francese bene, ma vivere che tipo di vita?
La vita di uno che parla solo inglese a Parigi è molto diversa da quella di qualcuno che parla francese qui. Vivere una vita “in inglese”, a Parigi , è una vita inevitabilmente incentrata sugli aspetti della cultura più ovvi: il cibo, il vino, i luoghi da visitare. Vivere “in francese” a Parigi ti permette di conoscere in profondità gli aspetti meno visibili della cultura, come l’amicizia, i paradigmi culturali, l’art de vivre e l’amore.
E’ chiaramente più facile usare solo l’Inglese nelle grandi città come Parigi piuttosto che nei villaggi in campagna. Detto questo, io raccomando sempre di imparare ed usare almeno le basi delle buone maniere, di come salutare e ringraziare perché questo può fare un’ enorme differenza nell’esperienza di viaggio.
(EN) My answer to this question has multiple layers. It is possible to live a life in Paris without speaking French well, but, what kind of life? The life that one has speaking English in Paris is very different than the life that one can have speaking French in Paris. A life led in English in Paris is one that inevitably is centered around the tangible aspects of French culture — the food, the wine, the sights. A French-speaking life led in Paris is able to be more deeply in touch with the intangible aspects of the culture, such as friendship, cultural paradigms, l’art de vivre and love. It is definitely easier to get by with just English in large cities like Paris than in a small village in the countryside. That said, I always recommend that people learn and use the basics of manners and greetings while here as that can make a remarkable difference in one’s experience.
CHIARA: Come vivi da americana in Francia? Frequenti più francesi o piu expats?- (EN) How do you live as an American in France? Do you have more French friends or expats?
CA: Quando sono arrivata la prima volta a Parigi per studiare durante il college, ho subito sentito quanto facile e rassicurante fosse e quanto grande era la tentazione di spendere tutto il tempo con gli altri studenti americani. Ho anche subito capito che questo mi avrebbe impedito di imparare veramente il francese, parlarlo fluidamente. Questo ha creato in me l’abitudine di tendere sempre a passare più tempo possibile con francesi, di parlare francese (anche se questo ovviamente, all’inizio, ha creato non pochi momenti imbarazzanti, spesso divertenti). Detto questo, io amo il mio circolo di amici americani a Parigi tanto quanto il mio giro di amici francesi. L’amicizia è un modo così bello di condividere e celebrare una cultura , e sono grata di vivere tra due.
(EN) When I first arrived in Paris to study abroad during college, I quickly felt how comfortable (and comforting), how tempting it was to spend all of my time with the other American students. I also immediately understood that this would preclude me from becoming fluid in French. That formed a habit for me of always leaning towards spending time with French people, of speaking French as much as possible (even though this of course made for many uncomfortable — and often hilarious — moments in the beginning). All of that said, I adore my circle of American expat friends here in Paris just as much as my circle of French friends, as friendship is such a beautiful way of sharing and of celebrating culture, and I am grateful to live between both cultures.
Come ti senti in Italia?
CHIARA: Quando vieni in Italia e parli italiano come ti senti ? ti senti ben accolta o ti senti intimorita o insicura…? – (EN) When you are in Italy and you speak Italian, how do you feel? Do you feel welcome or un easy?
CA: Mi sento veramente benvenuta quando vengo in Italia! La cultura francese può essere molto sommessa in contrasto con la cultura italiana e il livello di espressione esteriore delle emozioni e lo stile unico e personale in Italia mi fa sempre sentire a casa come americana.
(EN) I feel so welcome when I come to Italy! French culture can be very subdued in contrast to Italian culture and the level of outward expression of emotion and unique, personal style in Italy always makes me feel right at home as an American.
CHIARA: Hai nuovi progetti per il futuro?-(EN) Do you have new projects for the future?

CHIARA: Sai che io adoro le parole, ho una vera fissazione…Se tu dovessi scegliere una BELLA Parola italiana ? ( non so anche solo per il suono, per il significato…) – (EN) You know I love words and I have a true obsession for them. If you had to choose a beautiful Italian world , what would it be?
CA: Sì, noi due abbiamo la stessa fissazione. Amo così tante parole in italiano… può sembrare banale , ma è sincero, la prima parola che mi viene in mente è AMICIZIA . Adoro il suono di ci e zia in italiano, e quando penso alla cultura italiana , agli italiani in generale, penso alla connessione umana, ai momenti di condivisione. Non penso che potrebbe esistere la cultura italiana senza amicizia . E io sono grata per la nostra.
(EN) Yes, you and I share this obsession. I love so many words in Italian … It may sound trite, but it is sincere — the first word that comes to my mind is AMICIZIA, friendship. I love the ci and zia sounds in Italian and when I think of Italian culture, of Italians in general, I think of human connection, of shared moments. I don’t think that there could be Italian culture without amicizia. And I am grateful for ours.
