Chiacchiere con Chiara : Katy Sloop Roberts : “Grazie mille Katy per il tuo tempo per questa piccolo intervista!.”  Ho incontrato Katy Roberts su Instagram ed il suo blog  QUI ed ho scoperto i suoi deliziosi libri per bambini ambientati in Italia: Luna e Fortuna.   Lucky, Fortuna, è il gatto di famiglia e il protagonista delle sue storie.  Poi ci racconterà meglio Katy.

Ci siamo scritte  e ho saputo da Katy che aveva vissuto in Italia , nel Nord Italia, in una regione dove di solito non c’è un grande numero di turisti. Così sono molto curiosa di conoscere la sua esperienza in Italia.

 L’intervista 

1. Parlaci di te come preferisci, di dove sei, come sei arrivata in Italia / Please introduce yourself the way you want, where do you come from, tell us a bit about you and how did you come to Italy

Buongiorno mi chiamo Katy Sloop Roberts , sono americana, di Charlottesville in Virginia. Sono autrice di libri per bambini e ho avuto il privilegio di vivere in Italia , ad Aviano, dal 2019 al 2021.  Ho vissuto in vari posti perché mio marito è militare, nell’Aeronautica statunitense. Il suo lavoro ha portato la nostra famiglia a vivere in sei stati diversi in USA, in Germania e in Italia, la nostra destinazione preferita.

Quando ero ragazza ho sempre sognato di  visitare Roma. Volevo vedere le antiche rovine che resistono ai secoli, e l’arte. Ho finalmente visitato Roma nel 2017. Naturalmente, non ho visto tutto, tuttavia ho la sensazione che abbiamo visto, fatto, “conquistato” tutto quello che era possibile con il tempo che avevamo a disposizione. Veni, Vidi, Vici! Roma era proprio come me l’aspettavo, anche se Firenze è la mia città preferita e mi è piaciuto moltissimo perdermi anche per le strade di Venezia.

Vivere in Italia è stato come un sogno per me. Il fascino della lingua, la cultura , la storia, I paesaggi. Purtroppo eravamo arrivati solo da  7 mesi quando il Covid è esploso . Come molti di voi, tutti I piani sono stati cancellati ed ci siamo trovati con molto tempo libero a disposizione da riempire stando a casa. Appena le restrizioni sono diventate più leggere,  abbiamo fatto molti viaggi , più che potevamo , ma non siamo riusciti a vedere Amalfi e Pompei che erano in cima alla mia lista.

(EN) Buongiorno, I am Katy Sloop Roberts an American wife, mom, and children’s author who had the privilege to live in Aviano, Italy from 2019-2021.  My husband serves in the United States Air Force and that is how we came to live in Italy.  Originally, I am from Charlottesville, Virginia.  Many years of schooling and our military life has taken us to six US states, and Germany, but Italy is our favorite.

Growing up I always wanted to visit Rome.  I wanted to see the ancient ruins that stand the test of time, and I wanted to see the art. I got to visit Rome in 2017.  Of course, I did not see everything, but I still felt like we came, saw, and conquered the city in the time we had. Veni, Vedi, Vici.  Rome lived up to all of my expectations, though Florence is my favorite Italian city, and I enjoy getting lost in Venice.

Getting to live in Italy was like a dream.  I love the charm of the culture, language, history, and landscape.  Unfortunately, we were only in Italy for 7 months before COVID arrived. Like you, we had many canceled plans, and lots of time at home trying to be creative.  When restrictions lifted we crammed in as much travel as we could, but I still never got to visit the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii, both of which were high on my list.

2. Quante lingue parli?/ How many languages do you speak?

Parlo solo Inglese  ma ho fatto pratica in italiano ogni giorno quando ero là. Purtroppo non ho avuto molto preavviso prima di trasferirmi in Italia e poi c’è stato il Covid che ha bloccato tutto, l’energia personale e anche la possibilità di fare pratica con la comunità locale . Capisco abbastanza da cavarmela tutti I giorni, ma mi occorre molto tempo per rispondere e probabilmente non mi capiscono molto bene!  Avrei sicuramente potuto fare molto di più in una situazione differente!

(EN) I only speak English. I practiced Italian almost daily while we were there, but not having much notice we were moving there and then COVID put a damper on my energy and opportunities to practice in the community. I understand some language, enough to get by, but it takes me a long time to speak back and I probably don’t make much sense. I certainly could have done better.

3: Pensi che imparare una nuova lingua apra nuove vite?/ Do you think that learning a new language opens up to a new life?

Si sono d’accordo, imparare una lingua diversa è un’esperienza che arricchisce molto . Io sono ancora uno studente  principiante; parlo un po’ anche tedesco ma trovo la pronuncia molto difficile

(EN) I agree that learning a new language is an enriching experience that helps you grow, but I am still a beginner student.  I also know a little German, but I found the pronunciation very difficult.

4. Quanto è stato difficile, o facile,  vivere in Italia e quanto importante per te era poter parlare la lingua per vivere lì? / How difficult or easy was to live in Italy and how important you felt was being able to speak the language to live there?

Siccome eravamo nella base militare, molti italiani ad Aviano  parlano benissimo inglese. Inoltre eravamo sempre circondati da americani della Air Force e anche I miei bambini andavano a scuola dentro la base. Ma fuori della base era differente!  Nel villaggio nessuno degli italiani più anziani parla inglese, quindi per comunicare dovevo qualche volta usare Google traduttore quando ero in difficoltà.

Tuttavia, nonostante la barriera della lingua, prima di ripartire, un’ anziana vicina mi ha invitata a  casa sua e mi ha offerto dei biscotti. Sapeva che avevo scritto un libro ambientato nel suo villaggio e mi ha dato dei libri storici su Costa con vecchie foto in bianco e nero. Una foto di un soldato italiano della Seconda Guerra mondiale era stata fatta proprio davanti al cancello della casa dove io vivevo  !

(EN) Because of the air base, many Italians in Aviano speak beautiful English.  We were also surrounded in our Air Force community with Americans and my children attended school on base.  In our village, none of the older Italians spoke English. We communicated pleasantries, and I sometimes used Google Translate when I was stumped.  Despite the language barrier, before we moved, an elderly neighbor invited me to her home for cookies.  She knew I had written a book set in our village and she gave me some historical books about Costa that include black and white photographs. One photograph was taken of an Italian soldier leaving for WWII, he stood in front of the gate to the house where I lived.

5. Parlaci dei tuoi libri / tell us about your books

Il mio primo libro Mario and the Stones, era ispirato ad una  casa nella nostra strada.  Pensavo che somigliasse veramente  ad un uomo con I baffi. Ho avuto anche l’occasione di incontrare il proprietario della casa.  Era molto gentile e mi ha invitato ad entrare e visitare l’interno della casa che apparteneva a sua nonna e aveva un “fogolar friuliano” originale.  Ne parlo nel libro. E’ stato molto speciale poter vedere l’interno dell’abitazione (nel libro la casa si chiama : Mario) che aveva acceso cosi tanto la mia immaginazione!   Sono ancora in contatto con i proprietari della  casa e spero di tornare in futuro. Quando siamo partiti, abbiamo portato con noi un amico italiano: il nostro gatto Lucky che ha tenuto compagnia al mio figlio più piccolo salvandolo dalla solitudine: Lucky, Fortuna in italiano. Questo gatto  ha un’incredibile storia , ha sconfitto la morte ed è l’ispirazione del mio secondo libro : “Fortuna finds a family”.

(EN) My first book, Mario and The Stones, was inspired by a house on our street. I thought it looked like a man with a mustache. I also got to meet the owner of the house. He was kind and invited me to see the inside of the house which used to belong to his grandmother and has an original foglar friulano hearth.  I wrote about that in the book.  It was very special to see the inside of “The Mario” house which sparked my imagination.I am still in touch with our landlords.  I hope to see them again when we visit Italy in the future.  We did get to bring one Italian friend with us when we moved. Our cat, Lucky, befriended my younger son and saved him from loneliness.  Lucky has an amazing and death-defying story that is the inspiration for my second book, Fortuna Finds a Family.

6. Quali sono I tuoi progetti futuri?/ what are your future projects?

Spero di aggiungere altri libri alla serie di Luna e Fortuna per portare l’Italia ai giovani lettori di tutto il mondo. Uso un po’ di vocabolario italiano e brevi frasi  perché credo che arricchisca le storie.  Faccio del mio meglio per rappresentare, raccontare con le mie parole, com’è la vita in Italia , e come in particolare è vivere nella campagna italiana ai piedi delle Dolomiti. I mie libri hanno anche un tocco di magia perché si può scrivere quello che si vuole quando si scrive narrative per bambini.     

Ovviamente, la migliore ricerca per la mia scrittura, sarebbe tornare in Italia. Spero di non dovere stare lontano troppo a lungo perché l’Italia mi davvero conquistata! I “libri Luna & Fortuna” sono disponibili in tutto il mondo su Amazon e www.lunaandfortuna.com per residenti negli Stati Uniti.

(EN) I hope to add to the Luna and Fortuna book series to share Italy with readers all over the world.  I use Italian vocabulary and short phrases in my writing. I hope it enriches the stories. I do my best to paint pictures with my words of what life is like in the Italian countryside at the foot of the Dolomite mountains. My books also have hints of magic because you can write anything you want when you write fiction for children.

Of course, the best research for my writing would be returning to Italy.  I hope I do not have to stay away for too long because Italy stole my heart!Luna and Fortuna Books are available worldwide on Amazon, and at www.lunaandfortuna.com for U.S. residents.
