Chiacchiere con Chiara : Gaël Bassetto – Benvenuti al nuovo appuntamento di “Chiacchiere con Chiara”. Oggi sono particolarmente contenta di fare quattro chiacchiere con un uomo! Sì perché, di solito, ho una grande maggioranza di donne nelle mie classi e tra i miei allievi.

Lui non ha bisogno di presentazioni: Gaël Bassetto, nel mondo francofono è “La tavola di Gael”,  un blog (e un profilo Instagram) molto seguito dove Gaël condivide la sua passione per la cucina italiana, la famiglia ma anche la cultura, lo stile di vita, consiglia itinerari e luoghi da scoprire assieme a ricette e curiosità. Recentemente ha iniziato anche un programma di “Escapades gourmandes”in Italia, “tour gastronomici” che, sono sicura sarà un successo.  Ma Gaël è anche un esperto di comunicazioni e consulente di marketing. (EN) Welcome to another episode of “Chit chat with Chiara”. Today I am particularly happy to have a conversation with a man; in fact, my students are almost exclusively women.

 He, actually,  doesn’t  need my introduction: Gaël Bassetto , in the french-speaking world , is very well known for his blog “La tavola di Gaël”, , as well as his Instagram, where he shares his passion for Italian cuisine as well as Italian culture and   lifestyle .  Together with recipes, he suggests itineraries and places to see.   He has also recently started a program of culinary tours  off the beaten track . Gentilezza / Kindness

La prima parola che mi è subito venuta in mente quando l’ho conosciuto è stata “gentilezza”. Perché Gaël è un ragazzo estremamente gentile, una cortesia naturale e spontanea. Questo ragazzo, dal cognome italiano, ha accettato di rispondere alle mie domande anche senza conoscermi prima. Il suo racconto e la sua esperienza, da vero linguista, (scoprirete che è un linguista professionista) è molto interessante.

(EN)  The first word that came to my mind when I first met him was “kindness”.  In fact, he is extremely kind, gifted with that type of authentic and natural kindness not  easily found . This young man, with an Italian surname, agreed to answer my questions without even really knowing me. His story and his experiences, as a real linguist ( as you will find out) are very interesting . 

Le domande – Questions

La prima domanda è a proposito del suo cognome, perché la sua storia è la storia di una parte dell’Italia per cui ho un enorme rispetto: i nostri nonni emigranti/  My first question is about  his Italian surname, as his family’s history  is the story of a big part of Italy that I truly respect : our emigrants grandparents.

Gael di dove sei, questo cognome italiano da dove viene?/ Where are you from and what’s the origin of your surname?  

Io sono Belga con origini italiane. Il mio papà è italiano anche se lui è nato in Belgio, figlio della prima ondata di emigrazione dall’Italia dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Mio nonno ha lavorato nelle miniere nella zona centrale del Belgio, a sud di Charleroi. Una regione dove ci sono stati moltissimi italiani che appunto erano minatori.  (CB-aggiungo io: una vita durissima che recentemente, in occasione di un anniversario, è stata ricordata dal governo belga con parole molto belle per la comunità italiana. Ma l’integrazione non è sempre stata facile)

(EN) I am from Belgium. My father was italian but was born in Belgium, he was a first generation Italian immigrant, after the second world war. My grandfather worked in mines in the central part of the country, south of Charleroi, a region known for Italian immigration. Many Italians left their homeland to work as miners in this part of  Belgium ( CB- I would like to add; they had a very hard life and recently,  on the occasion of a special anniversary, the Italian community was remembered by the Belgian government. However,  integration has not always been easy)

In famiglia parlavi in italiano?/  Did you use to speak Italian at home?

Stranamente non tanto, infatti in quel periodo gli italiani non erano “visti molto bene”, direi che non erano visti per niente bene. Posso capire i motivi del nonno.  Sicuramente voleva assicurare che i figli si integrassero al meglio nel paese nuovo.  Per questo molti italiani  cercavano di rendere più francofono  possibile il loro nome, per integrarsi più facilmente.  Un cognome come Viventino, per esempio, diventava Viventin ecc.   I miei nonni guardavano sempre la TV italiana, quindi io sono cresciuto sentendo l’Italiano ma soprattutto il dialetto veneto dei miei nonni.  ma non la parlavo. Il  nonno era di San Donà di Piave  e la nonna di Padova. Non posso dire che parlavo italiano veramente . Infatti io l’italiano l’ho riscoperto 20 anni dopo quando ho conosciuto mia moglie Chiara, che è di Trieste.

(EN) It may seem strange, but we didn’t speak Italian much at home.   In those times in Belgium, Italians were not higly regarded, I would rather say they were not looked on well at all. I can understand my grandfather’s reasons, he certainly wanted to ensure that the children integrated as well as possible in the new country. That’s why many Italians also changed their surnames so that they sounded more French in order to integrate more easily. Just to give you an example, a surname like Viventino, would change into Viventin (with French pronounciation) etc.    My grandparents used to watch Italian TV all the time, so I grew up listening to Italian and, above all, the dialect from their region, the Veneto region. My grandfather was from San Donà di Piave and my grandmother from Padua. I can’t say that I was able to speak Italian. It was actually 20 years later that I re-discovered it when I met the girl who is now my wife, Chiara, from Trieste.

Come hai conosciuto tua moglie? / How did you two meet?

Ci siamo conosciuti durante l’Erasmus in Spagna (proprio come il famoso film francese “L’auberge espagnole”, ecco noi siamo quelli del film!) . Io studiavo per diventare interprete, ad Alicante c’ è un ottima scuola.

(EN)  We met during an Erasmus in Spain (like the story , from a famous French movie, set in Spain  during an Erasmus study experience) I was studying to become Interpreter, as in Alicante there is a very good school.

Quante lingue parli?/ How many languages do you speak?

Francese, inglese, spagnolo, italiano e un po’ di fiammingo. / (EN) French, English, Spanish, Italian and a bit of Flemish

Hai lavorato come interprete? Have you worked as an Interpreter?

No, poi ho aggiunto più tardi un Master in Comunicazioni perché lavorando come interprete mi sentivo un po’ frustrato. Non potevo creare cose “mie” come le lingue, solo tradurre il lavoro di altri. MI faceva comodo però parlare molte lingue perché, vivendo a Bruxelles, il centro della comunità europea, mi ha permesso di lavorare per molte organizzazioni internazionali nel campo delle Comunicazioni. Cosa che ho fatto per molto tempo

(EN) No, I later  did a Master  in Communications.   When working as an Interpreter, I felt quite frustrated as I couldn’t create my own things with the languages, I was only able to translate someone else’s work. However, being able to speak many languages in Brussels, the heart of European Community, has been very useful to me. I worked in communications for international organizations for a long time.

Come hai deciso di cominciare il blog?/  How did you decide to start the blog project?

È nato nel 2018 . Chiara, mia moglie mi raggiungeva spesso a Bruxelles e facevamo le vacanze sempre in Italia, così ho avuto molte occasioni di conoscere produttori locali, sperimentare ristoranti, non ristoranti di lusso ma la vera cucina italiana, autentica , genuina,  che è sempre stata una delle mie passioni. Così ho deciso di condividere un po’ di tutto questo nel blog

(EN) The blog started in 2018. My wife Chiara used to often come to Brussels and we used to have our holidays away in Italy. So I had the chance to meet local producers, try many restaurants, not five-star restaurants, but rather, the real authentic places where you find simple and delicious Italian cuisine, which has always been my passion. So I decided to share all this in a blog.

La Tavola è un bellissimo titolo che hai scelto …Infatti in italiano la tavola, al femminile, non è il tavolo che è piuttosto un mobile , come una scrivania…la tavola è il luogo dove si mangia, ci si incontra, è la condivisione. / I love yor choice of name La tavola. In italian la tavola, used as feminine word, is different form the the masculin , il tavolo, that is just a desk, a piece of furniture. La tavola is THE place were people meet,gather, and share (feelings, conversation , life)

Esatto! Ho pensato tanto al nome del blog perché volevo proprio trasmettere questo aspetto di condivisione ma anche di semplicità di accoglienza, di generosità all’italiana e volevo che si sentisse questo.

(EN) Exactly so! I thought a lot about the name of the blog because I really wanted to convey this aspect of sharing but also of simplicity of the welcoming italian attitude,  generosity and I wanted people to feel this!

In famiglia con i bambini che lingue parlate? / What language do you speak at home with your children?

Adesso viviamo in Italia. Io parlo francese con loro, mia moglie italiano e cerchiamo di mantenere le due lingue in famiglia per loro.

(EN) Now we are living in Italy and I speak French while my wife speak Italian with the children. We try to keep both languages within the family.

Chi parla più lingue vive più vite…che ne pensi? /what do you think about my motto?

Sono d’accordo, Avendo studiato le lingue, per me una lingua è proprio lo specchio di un popolo, è un modo di vedere le cose, lo trovi nei modi di dire, espressioni uniche ch , in ogni lingua rappresenta la sua ricchezza. E spesso esistono anche parole o espressioni che non esistono in un ‘altra lingua, non sono traducibili perché sono veramente concetti differenti e tipici di ogni popolo. Difficilissimi da tradurre e questo apre proprio un mondo nuovo.  Anche l’intonazione è diversa in funzione alla lingua che uno parla.

(EN) I totally agree. Having studied languages, for me each language truly is a reflection of its country, a way of looking at things; you can find this in the idiomatic expressions, like  unique ways  to express something that doesn’t exist in another language. And this has great value , it really opens a new world. 

Da linguista, cosa consigli per imparare una lingua?/ As language expert what would you advise to learn a language?

Per me fondamentale è parlare, parlare con la gente. Se penso a me, io l’italiano l’ho imparato unicamente parlandolo, senza nemmeno fare la grammatica. Ora sono sciolto a parlare ma secondo me , per parlare bisogna “pratiquer”, come si dice in francese,  cioè fare pratica.

(EN) In my opinion speaking is the main thing. If I think of my experience, I learnt Italian only by speaking, without even studying the grammar. Now I feel confident but, I think that in order to  speak one needs to do lots of practice.

Dicci qualcosa sui tuoi nuovi progetti. / Tell us something about your future projects

Come sai, un anno e mezzo fa siamo venuti a vivere in Toscana e ora ho iniziato a organizzare Viaggi gastronomici (escapades gourmandes)  in angoli d’Italia per conoscere produttori locali, regioni italiane . Sono dei piccoli soggiorni, dei weekend lunghi, in regioni meno conosciute.  La Toscana, anche se ci abito, ancora non so…è molto conosciuta, ci sono molti turisti, per adesso preferisco altre mete.

(EN) As you already know, 1year and half ago we came to live in Tuscany. Now I have started organising long weekends to discover Italy and its culinary tradition, culinary tours in lesser-known regions. Tuscany I don’t know yet. Even if I do live here, there are many tourists, for now I prefer other destinations .
