Perchè si dice Prendere una cantonata?

Una cantonata  (o cantone) è una parola usata per indicare un angolo tra due strade . Oggi l’espressione  è utilizzata per dire “ fare una gaffe”, sbagliarsi in modo evidente. 

Da dove nasce? Dai tempi antichi quando le carrozze, per le strade, girando agli angoli delle strette viuzze, sbattevano contro le cantonate. Più o meno come succede ancora oggi prendendo certe curve strette nelle stradine di Firenze!  Questo il vero e proprio senso di “prendere in pieno una cantonata! “  In senso figurato indica un malinteso.

La parola “cantonata” inoltre si usa per indicare qualcosa che si trova on grande facilità: “che si trova ad ogni cantonata”(si trova ad ogni angolo)

In Italian una cantonata is a word referring to a  corner between two streets. Today the expression is used when making a big mistake. 

Where does it come from? It comes from the old times. when carriages with horses, at night, in narrow alleys were bumping into street corners . More or less what happens today as well with our cars when turning into narrow streets in Florence, for example.  This is Prendere una cantonata in the physical sense, while as a figure of speech, it refers to a misunderstanding.

Moreover, the word “cantonata” is also used to indicate something very common,  that can be found at every corner:  “ si trova ad ogni cantonata”.
