Alla scoperta di Barga: La Garfagnana è una parte di Toscana forse meno nota al turismo di massa. È un’ampia zona dell’Appennino non molto distante da Lucca, coperta di boschi con piccoli borghi sparsi.
È un luogo che richiama l’autunno o l’inverno, con le castagne arrostite, il fuoco nel caminetto ed una calda coperta di lana sulle spalle.
A circa 400 metri di altezza, il borgo di Barga, domina un meraviglioso panorama sulla Garfagnana. Andiamo a visitarla in occasione di una fiera del cioccolato, ma per me è solo una scusa, per tornarci di nuovo.
Da Lucca a Barga impieghiamo circa mezz’ora, è facile trovare parcheggio e ci incamminiamo verso il paese arrampicato su una ripida (steep) collina che culmina nel Duomo.
Barga è un paese delizioso e in questa giornata speciale le sue vie sono allegramente invase da bancarelle, la maggior parte delle quali espongono cioccolato. Passiamo accanto all’elegante Loggia dei Mercanti, giungiamo lentamente al Teatro dell’Accademia dei Differenti, fondata nel ‘700 e scopriamo qua e là angoli nascosti e sorprendenti .
La stradina che stiamo seguendo sale in alto verso il Duomo che ci attira come fosse una enorme calamita (magnet). Dopo aver percorso un’ampia scalinata raggiungiamo il piazzale davanti il Duomo che, sul lato meridionale è protetto da una fila di imponenti cipressi . Dall’ampio piazzale si ha una bella vista sul paese e le montagne circostanti .
Il Duomo, grande e possente tanto da sembrare una fortezza, è dedicato a San Cristoforo , un santo della Chiesa ortodossa. La chiesa ha un interno a tre navate ed è molto semplice come tutte le chiese romaniche.
Le navate prendono luce da numerose monofore che lasciano filtrare una bellissima luce dorata che inonda letteralmente la chiesa. La chiesa contiene pochi ma preziosi tesori.
Tornando giù in paese discutiamo di dove far pranzo. Durante il festival del cioccolato simpatici abitanti del borgo cucinano la polenta in enormi pentoloni serviti lungo la strada. Ci fermiamo poi per un buon caffè nel bar della Loggia dei Mercanti e dopo l’acquisto di un po’ di cioccolato ci apprestiamo a lasciare il paese.
Qualcuno propone di fare una sosta a Lucca. …Beh questa però sarà un’altra storia.

Barga la scozzese
Lo sapete che Barga ha un legame speciale con la Scozia?
Alla fine dell’800 infatti, molti dei suoi abitanti emigrarono in Scozia in cerca di fortuna. Di ritorno, una volta in pensione, portarono con sé mogli, figli e tradizioni scozzesi. E così oggi è facile sentire locali parlare normalmente in inglese o chiamarsi tra di loro con nomi inglesi.
Tra questi c’è Paolo Marchetti, detto “Gas”, proprietario di un bar. Prima di fare il barista, Paolo ha cambiato mille lavori tra cui il venditore di bombole del gas. Quando Paolo ha un anno, la famiglia si trasferisce in Scozia, dove vivevano già altri parenti, e cresce lì fino a 19 anni, quando la famiglia decide di tornare in Italia e aprire un bar. Il bar negli anni è divenuto il punto di riferimento degli italo-scozzesi del borgo e di tutti i turisti che vengono mandati lì dai passanti per traduzioni e informazioni in inglese.
Ogni domenica la piccola sala tv del locale si riempie di tifosi del Celtic Glasgow.
Barga , la Scozia e la musica
La famosa giovane violinista britannica Nicola Benedetti ha le sue radici a Barga.
Nata nel 1987 in Scozia ha padre italiano di Barga e madre italo – scozzese di Udine. . Comincia a suonare il violino all’età di quattro anni ed è un vero talento. Nel 2020 vince un Grammy award (Best Classical Instrumental Solo). Nel Marzo 2022 diventa Direttrice del Festival Internazionale di Edimburgo. In questo ruolo Nicola è la prima donna e la prima scozzese a ricoprire la carica di Direttore del Festival dal suo inizio nel 1947.
Un Borgo digitale
Barga è il primo centro storico medievale codificato in QR.
Dal 2008 infatti tutti i luoghi di interesse sono stati contrassegnati con una piccola mattonella di ceramica con un codice bidimensionale – o QR code. Il nome QR è l’abbreviazione dell’inglese “Quick Response” (risposta rapida), per la rapida decodifica del contenuto. Basta inquadrare il Qr Code con uno smartphone o un tablet per veder comparire notizie, storie e curiosità.

La Garfagnana is a less renowned part of Tuscany. It’s a wide area of the Appennino, not far from Lucca, a town that I adore.
The Garfagnana is covered with woods, small villages scattered along the woods. It’s a place that sends you back immediately to autumn, or winter, with roasted chestnuts, fire in the fireplace and warm woolly blankets on the shoulders. We happened to be in the area for the occasion of a chocolate fair but, for me, this was only an excuse.
It took us around half an hour from Lucca to reach Barga, where it is easy to find a parking space, and we walked towards the city .
Perched on a steep hill that reaches the Duomo Cathedral, dedicated to San Cristoforo, Barga is a delightful town, and on the occasion, its roads were full of stalls – most of them displaying a wide variety of chocolate. We passed by the elegant Loggia dei Mercanti, and we slowly reached the Teatro dell’Accademia dei Differenti, founded in the 1700s. All around us we found surprising hidden corners.
Our road went upwards all the way to the Duomo that seemed to attract us like a giant magnet. After a set of stairs, we reached the square in front of the cathedral, protected by a row of impressive cypress trees .
The wide square has a beautiful view of both the town and the surrounding mountains.
The Duomo is dedicated to San Cristoforo, a saint for the Orthodox Church. Inside, the has three naves and is very simple, as Romanesque churches are. The naves are illuminated by numerous single-lancet windows, closed by alabaster panels allowing a beautiful golden light to filter through. The church contains a few but precious treasures.
Coming back to town, we discussed where to have lunch. The choice was simple, in the occasion of the Chocolate Festival, huge inviting pots of polenta were cooked along the road by old happy local folks. We chat and laughed with them and, before leaving the village , of course we bought several varieties of chocolate and cakes form the many stalls around us. This is what we call “an experiential travel”Someone suggested taking a detour for Lucca… This, however, will be another story.
Curiosities: Barga the Scottish town
Do you know that the town has a special relashionsip with Scotland?
Back to 1800 many poor families from this area emigrated to Scotland. When the same people retired, they decided to go back to their beloved village and came back with their husbands, wives , children as well as their scottish traditions.
Paolo Marchetti, his nickname is “Gas”, is the owner of a local bar. Paolo had many different jobs before today, one of them was selling gas bottles. He emigrated when he was 1 year old when his parents joined the rest of the family in Scotland. He then grew up there and moved back to Italy when he was 19 and, with his family decided to open the cafè. Today his place is the meeting point for all the English speaking Italian-Scottish locals as well as the tourists that come here for information or if they need help or a translation.
On Sundays, the TV room of the bar is full of Celtic Glasgow fans.

The famous violin player Nicola Benedetti as her roots in Barga. Born in the Scottish town of Irvine, of Italian heritage, (her father is from Barga , her mother is italo-scottish from Udine) Nicola began playing violin at the age of four. Extremely talented, she won a Grammy award for Best Instrumental Solo in 2020. In March 2022, Nicola became the Director Designate of the Edinburgh International Festival, becoming Festival Director on 1 October 2022. In taking the role she will be both the first Scottish and the first female Festival Director since the Festival began in 1947.
