Scopriamola insieme!

(EN) Today we are live in Paris with a very interesting woman. She is Italian, the new language she has learnt is French, and she’s going to  tell us how this has changed her life.

Aurora Visentin, lives in Paris but is from Milan.  Her surname sounds French but it’s totally Italian. We could say she wears many hats: Among other projects, she is also the author of the blog Una Milanese a Parigi.  Let’s find out more about her!

Domande & Risposte

/good morning tell us about yourself, what do you do ?

(EN) I work as a lawyer, specialized in labor law, I deal with Italian companies working with France. I explain to Italian companies how it works here. In fact, the two countries are close but very different. A bit like in your work, Chiara, you talk about cultural exchanges,  cultural awareness, the differences … for me too this can also be seen in the field of Law. Law basically is the application of rules to life.  My name sounds French but it is from Veneto, my grandfather was from Veneto, but my family is from Milan. I live in Paris in the 5th arondissment and I arrived here 12 years ago.

12 anni fa, e quando tu sei arrivata sei arrivata per lavoro?/12 years ago, and did you come for work?

No in realtà no. Per parlare della lingua, il focus di questa intervista, diciamo che io il francese l’avevo imparato in Erasmus. L’avevo imparato all’università. Ho dovuto fare esami in francese quindi l’ho poi imparato in Francia.

(EN) Not really. Talking about  language, the focus of this interview, let’s say that I learnt French during  my Erasmus. I had initially  learnt it in university. The university had preparatory courses for Erasmus students. Later, I had to take exams in French so I then learnt it even more in France. Even if it was not yet French for a “lawyer” (because a specific vocabulary is needed for this job).

Then I kept this knowledge of the language as a “wild card” that I could use one day in the future. In fact, back in Milan, I attended the (French) cultural center, I kept my language trained with French films and I immersed myself in the culture even before returning to France and this helped me a lot.   Cinema, humor are very useful things to learn language and culture. When you can understand jokes, humor then you have reached an advanced level. Also, for example, French humor is completely different from the Italian one (the two are a completely different thing). Sometimes French people laugh at things that don’t make us laugh. They have a slightly darker humor than ours.

Come & Quando?

Quindi tu hai imparato tramite un corso iniziale ma poi hai fatto continue  immersioni in lingua e cultura / So you learnt French, initially, with a  course and then with regular cultural immersions

lettere e parole

(EN) For me personally,  having arrived in France, in Paris I found free courses for foreigners of the highest level which are organized by the Maries ( city councils) of the individual districts, the courses are given by excellent  professors who are also very strict. I attended for a month, I remember many dictations which have been very useful to me in my profession. But it takes time.

Il processo di apprendimento non è una cosa rapida, ci vuole tempo/ It does actually depend on the reason for learning a language: if it is for  basic communication for everyday life, it is different from what you need than if it is for a particular job.  However, the learning process is not  quick.

(EN) I must say that for Italians, the French language  is not very difficult, but I still had to do many exercises, use books, learn many conjugations of verbs and accents which are different for us. However yes, it takes a commitment

when your French experience made the difference, when did you decide to move to France?

Ho detto “me ne vado”.

(EN) Well, I’m not ashamed to say it. I also talk about this in my blog, I am passionate and romantic, I had a very painful  breakup and I felt the need to leave my country, to leave Milan to distance myself from this person, to disconnect. France has always been in my heart. My mom always told me about France because she was in love with it, she passed on her passion for this country to me. My name is Aurora also because my mum chose the name from a French actress called Aurore Clement…so ..France has always been in my life

Era scritto nel destino

Allora era proprio scritto nel tuo destino../ it was really written in the stars…

Eh sì , grazie a mia  madre!

(EN)Yes, thanks to my mother! So, after  my Erasmus, as I had many friends there, I came back as it was easier to find an accomodation with friends living there. Finding a house is the  most difficult thing in Paris . With my blog, one of the things I often do is  actually help) young people who need assistance in finding accommodations in Paris).  So, once the house was sorted , I looked  for a job and that also takes time.

Then finally you met a French man who became your husband, it is all very romantic!

(EN) Yes, in the end you need to have the courage, because then many doors open up for you..

I always talk about a new language as a tool, a key to open doors, even real ones, as thank s to a new language you may have new unexpected opportunities

Milano & Parigi

Queste due città sono simili, diverse?/ you have this demanding job and I also know that you are involved in an important project for women ,you will tell us about it later. But you also have a” lighter “side: that is your blog where you talk about  curiosities and the differences between Milan and Paris, how different/similar are these two cities?Milano at a glance | YesMilano

(EN) They are very similar, in my opinion Milan is perhaps the Italian city most similar to Paris, for many things, both positive and negative. I am not the classic Milanese who dispassionately loves Milan, I recognize its merits, in particular I love my family, friends, but I am not like my sister, my friends, for them “Milan, Milan is the top”,  I wasn’t like that. I always had an attraction for Paris  I must say that in recent times Milan has been artistically avant-garde, it has chased after Paris in art and culture, but now Milan has grown a lot and I have seen it shine over the years. In fact, Milan has exploded culturally.

Quando Milano è esplosa artisticamente, culturalmente?/ When did Milan really  change from an artistic and cultural point of view?

Cosa fare e vedere a Milano in 3 giorni - Hellotickets

(EN) I would say in the last 5 years, now it’s really alive. It offers a lot and then there is the link with Paris in design, in fashion. There are many things in common. The attitude of the Milanese and Parisians is also very similar. I noticed, we Milanese are seen as cold, distant, initially, then later we make strong, solid and loyal friendships.  Parisians are like that.

I always tell my students that Italy is a “very long country” with many cultural differences. What you find when you arrive in Rome is totally different from Milan. People also have a friendly image of Tuscany,  but it isn’t always so. People in Tuscany can be quite brisk sometimes. An English lady that studies with me and travels a lot, told me that after travelling in Sicily, she was surprised when she arrived in Tuscany. She felt at home in Sicily but it wasn’t the case in Tuscany. Just to give you an example of the fact that Italy varies greatly from place to place

Famiglia bilingue?

Senti Aurora hai bambine? quanti anni hanno? / Aurora, do you have children? How old are they?

Ho 3 bambine.

(EN) I have three daughters , I have twins, they are 8 and the little one  is 5 years old. We have chosen French names and Italian  middle names.

Le bimbe sono bilingui? /are the girls bilingual?

(EN) I’d say yes for the two older ones, even if they currently make mistakes in writing that need to be corrected. The younger one is not bilingual at the moment

Tu parli italiano in casa? Do you speak Italian at home?

(EN) I try as much as possible but it is difficult for me because they speak French to each other, they answer me in French. I try to keep the Italian language but it is hard for me and I forget to speak Italian

This is interesting because I usually meet mothers that always speak their mother tongue at home.

(EN) That’s right, it’s definitely the right  thing to do. It should be like this, however, since French is spoken in the family too, in the end we speak French

I don’t want to take too much of your time but I know that you are involved with the Global Thinking Foundation and I would like to know more about it.

(EN) It is an Italian organization created by Claudia Segre, who is the President. It deals with preventing economic violence against women. The battle is that of gender equality, the plan is providing economic and financial training to women to guarantee independence in order to be able to protect themselves from economic dependence.

È un’organizzazione italiana? / Is it an Italian organization?

(EN) It is Italian; a French branch has now been created. There are various activities, with courses and counselling centers across the country like in Italy. We’re trying to do the same in France. This is also thanks to our bilingual work .  We have adopted the model which works in Italy with a practical guide on how to open bank accounts, how to deal with financial difficulties etc. a very practical guide.

Buon lavoro. / It is important to publicize this kind of work, now more than ever.

(EN) I realize that we take many things for granted. However, even when talking to women at the highest levels, when we believe that there is a total independence, in reality we see there are dynamics in which women are not totally free.

Donne indipendenti

Poi tu hai  figlie femmine quindi è importante / you have daughters so this is even more important for you

(EN) For us, mothers,it is important to be an example. Finding the balance between being present and being independent women. Explaining to our daughters that it is important to be independent. Then everyone chooses what to do with their lives  but it has to be a free choice, and you must always remain independent even if you decide to  give up your job.
