Chiacchiere con Chiara

1.Per cominciare presentati come meglio preferisci, dicci un po’ di te, da dove vieni, dove vivi…/Please introduce yourself the way you want, where do you live and where do you come from, tell us a bit about you

Mia madre è indiana, mio padre americano e così io sono cresciuta in entrambi i Paesi, in India e negli Stati Uniti.

Attraverso l’università ho poi avuto l’opportunità di studiare all’estero a Lione, in Francia.

(EN) Bonjour, I’m Sarala. I’m an American living in the south of France. My mother is from India and my father is from the United States so I grew up in both India and the US. But 13 years ago when I was 18 years old, I visited France for the first time and immediately fell in love. I decided I wanted to move to France someday and enrolled in French classes at my university. Through university, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Lyon, France. That was a magical summer. I lived with a French family in their beautiful old home and every evening we would have long dinners together outside in their garden. That was my introduction to French cuisine and after I returned home, I continued to teach myself French cooking. In 2020, during the COVID lockdowns, I had a lot of time on my hands, as many of us did. I decided to start creating vegan versions of French recipes, as a fun project and challenge to fill the time. I had recently adopted a plant based diet and was missing French cooking. I started sharing my recipes on Instagram which led to my cookbook, ‘Vegan French Favorites’. Then, I finally moved to France in the autumn of 2021, where I now very happily live and continue to learn and experiment with plant based French cooking.

  1. Quante lingue parli? / How many languages do you speak?

(EN) I wish I could say speak several languages but I really only speak English and French. Growing up in India, where English is widely spoken and where I attended English school, I wasn’t forced to learn Hindi or my mother’s language, which is Telegu. However as a cild I used to spek my mother’s language. Of course, today I know a little of these languages but not at a conversational level. Now that I’m older I know the value of speaking multiple languages and I wish I could go back and learn my mother’s language. I’ve been studying French for years and know enough to easily get around in France and have a basic conversation. But I would like to be able to have meaningful and complex conversations in French. Oftentimes, French people want to talk about American politics with me so that motivates me to get better at expressing myself.

E’ vero anche per te?/ Do you agree with my “motto” : chi parla più lingue vive più vite”? Is it this true for you as well?

Assolutamente d’accordo!

(EN) I absolutely agree! To learn another language is to learn another culture. Enrolling in French at university opened the door for me to immerse myself in France, learn French cooking, move to France and create a whole new life for myself. I was not raised around French culture or people and had no connection to France. But through learning the French language, I discovered a longing inside myself for a world so different than my own. The life I have now is not at all what I imagined as a child- and I’m so happy!

  1. Come ha influenzato la tua vita parlare un’altra lingua?/How speaking another language have had an impact on your life

    Sarala+Terpstra-Chiacchiere-con-Chiara

(EN) I believe speaking another language makes you a more empathetic person. You continually have to see things from a different point of view and you realize that we are all human, sharing the same struggles and joys of this existence, even if we have different ways of expressing it. As a perfectionist, learning another language has made me more accepting of failure. I’m never going to be perfect at French and I’m always going to have an accent, so I might as well just have fun and enjoy the journey.

5: Quale è la differenza tra cucina vegana e plant-based? in Italiano plant-based possiamo tradurre con cucina botanica/ What is the difference between vegan cuisine and plant-based?

Being vegan has a wider meaning. It has more to do with a general concept ranging from what to wear, what to use for  make-up, animal rights… Plant-based is a new concept and trend that is more focused on what is healthy and sustainable . For me I am really focused on healthy eating and what is good for us and for the environment around us

6. Parlaci dei tuoi progetti futuri/ Tell us about your future projects

(EN) I am always cooking and experimenting in my kitchen and my focus continues to be on creating plant based French cuisine. I regularly share recipes on Instagram and I’ve also started offering online cooking classes. I would like to write another cookbook eventually that will be much larger than my first. A long-term dream of mine is to offer in-person cooking classes or even start a cooking school in France. For now, I will happily keep learning and sharing the French cuisine, culture, and language.
